“Out of the Past”

Concept Statement

‘Out of the Past’ explores the duality of the American Frontier at the turn of the 20th century – the legend of the American West and its harsh realities. The Frontier long stood as a symbol of hope, opportunity and self-preservation, shaping the American image, however conflict, danger and unrelenting winters were the reality. This collection draws from both the idealized legend that was the frontier and its harsher truths. Lawlessness, harsh natural terrain and the unknown made the Frontier a callous place to exist. Beautiful, vast natural landscapes paired with the freedom and rugged individualism of the era caused Americans to cling to ideals of the old west as the industrial revolution seized the nation. Soft, delicate fabrics are paired with rugged outerwear and utilitarian details to explore the tension between the reminiscence of the old west and the ruthless truth behind it. A light, natural color palette along with historical references reflect the romanticization and nostalgia of the American Frontier. Interactive components highlight the slow, attentive lifestyle of the period.
