Project statement
A palette is something an artist uses to mix colors, and that is what I see the Theatre as, a collaborative effort by designers, directors, playwrights, actors and of course Stage Management. As a Stage Manager I have had the honor and privilege to have worked with many amazing, creative and talented minds as we put on a performance together. Everyone creates their part for the production and then entrusts it to the Stage Management team to put all the pieces with the help of the director to tell the story we want to tell. Stage Managers will tell you time and time again that no performance will ever be the same as we will notice the smallest disturbances and will somehow problem solve the issue within a few moments to keep the show running. That is our art as Stage Managers, being the voice of reason and leadership in the rehearsal space so we are able to keep on track to make sure everyone has what they need to perform their craft. I couldn't pick one specific show to showcase, so I chose the ones that I felt helped me learn something new about the experiences and life of a community in the world that is not my own. I feel that is something we all have a responsibility to learn, to respect and understand that we all come from different backgrounds, but it is all those ingredients that make the art we enjoy today.Insert about info…
About the Artist
Kevin Vilchez is a Chicago native and resides in one of Chicago's suburbs. Even though his concentration is in Stage Management, he has worked as a Carpenter and Scenic Painter in the Scenic Shop for the Columbia College Theatre Department, he has taken the stage as a performer from time to time, and practices Stage Combat in spare time. He plans on staying in the Chicago area as he sees the city as a great big melting pot for all kinds of artists to work on collaborations. Kevin is also one of the original founding members of the Student Theatre Advisory Council (STAC) here at Columbia which works in collaboration with the Theatre Department faculty to holds the Theatre Department accountable to make sure that it is a place where every voice is heard and put on the stage with it not being just diverse performers but on the creative and production team side as well. He truly believes that it is time to tell more stories of everyone else we see in the world without the theme relying just on trauma. Kevin wants to take what he has learned about DEI and take it in the industry and hopefully help other artists be able to advocate for themselves should they ever feel like they are being exploited.information…
