Artist Statement

The Righteous Killer is a dark comedy about Stuart, a seasoned serial killer who realizes all his victims have been people of color. Determined to prove he's not racist, he embarks on a mission to kill a white man. With help from his serial killer support group, Stuart's plans spiral into absurdity, forcing him to confront his motives.

Hossam Shaker (he/him) is an Egyptian filmmaker and academic who recently completed his MFA in Film Directing at Columbia College Chicago through a Fulbright scholarship. He is a current lecturer in the Film Studies Department at the British University in Egypt, where he has taught for five years. His short documentary Where the Wild Things Live won Best Documentary from the Egyptian National Institute for Cinema. He also co-wrote the short fiction film Re-Mote El Television, which screened at international festivals including Alexandria, Helsinki, and San Jose. Shaker’s films explore race and power through satire, most recently in The Righteous Killer.
