Bajo El Mismo Sol
Lorena De Leon
“This is a story of lineage and legacy, inspired by the lullabies my parents sung to me: the griefs, the hardships, and the strengths of my world.”
Artist Statement
I’ve never understood heart break, but I know for certain that even fire and blood can be blue. Like a flame to a candle that turns to smoke, I too exist and transcend.
I was raised in a family where stories were fantasies, the present was a memory, and space was a crowded room. I am my mother’s favorite memory, and my father’s favorite story to share with the world. I am from pavement that recognizes my shoe print as my mother’s, from corridors that echo the lullabies my father once played for me, and from the shadows of pegao (scorched rice) at the bottom of my caldero.
