Flesh
Madison Chain
“Flesh aims to show hidden insecurities, and allows an individual to wear them, magnify them and show how these nuanced characteristics are beautiful."
Artist Statement
Growing up with severe pectus excavatum, a condition where the sternum sinks into the rib cage, I wished I could see more people with the same condition as me. Flesh is a celebration of bodies, and brings visibility to the nuances of humanity. In this collection, I explored the variations of bodies, and mimicked the scars, bumps, marks, and more through fashion. The world of fashion is no stranger to masking the natural human body. From corsetry to padding, clothing sells society’s ideal body, and individuals try to comply with the standards given to them. However, Flesh aims to not only show these hidden insecurities, but to also allow an individual to wear them, magnify them and show how these nuanced characteristics are beautiful.

The Process
When creating this collection, I learned a lot through trial and error. Sometimes I would have a vision in my head of what I wanted each piece to look like, but I had to try many different things in order to create what I wanted. It was important for me to experiment in this process, and although some pieces ended up being different than what I originally imagined, I ended up loving them more.
