Long Journey
Semi-abstract constructed still lives and sets. Elements of horror. As the subconscious is always personal, I would like to know more about what the artist is channeling.
Cinema of Tarkovsky and the surrealists. The Hand in Under the only hint at a protagonist. Otherworldly.
The archival footage in the video spliced for a non-narrative sequence. Subconsciousness is formed by experiences. Smoke and mirrors hinting at spiritualism.
Through a series of photographs and videos Georgescu takes the viewer across a passage to her unconscious visualized in a restrained palette of deep reds, milky whites, and midnight blues. The semi-abstract images allude to the otherworldly, space of spirits and fragmented thoughts. The non-narrative structure of the videos presents a sequence of collaged footage clips reminiscent of surrealist films with phobias-inducing imagery by Maya Deren.
Particularly intriguing are the narrow rays of light that distort the scale of the still photographs deliberately confusing the eye about the proportion of the scenes pictured, whether it might be a tabletop construction or a planetary sized aerial.

- Ali Georgescu -
Ali Georgescu is a lens-based artist living and working in Chicago. After completing her bachelor's degree in studio art in 2019, she enrolled at Columbia College Chicago where she recently received a master’s degree in photography.
Ali utilizes a mixed-media approach to her projects, combining sculpture, video, photography, and sound to create immersive photographs and installation-oriented video pieces. Her work demonstrates a quest to create an experiential sensory language for internal psychological worlds. Influenced by the surrealists of the early 20th century, Ali creates artwork by engaging with and exploring the idea of the unconscious self through an intuitive art practice.
