Lejanos - Composing the Music to a Short Film

Sebastian Splinter

“The soundtrack had to encapsulate the nostalgic feelings of home, without relying on stereotypical conceptions of Latin-American music.”

ABOUT

Artist statement

Lejanos is a short film produced by Bastian Orellana. Written as a fiction,it was the hope of the producer that the work would raise awareness to the horrifyingly exploitative working conditions that migrant workers are faced with on Canadian soil.

Lejanos means “far away” in Spanish. The soundtrack had to encapsulate the nostalgic feelings of home, without relying on stereotypical conceptions of Latin-American music. The music is a blend of contemporary Latin-American sounds, while maintaining a “soundtrack” style using conventional, contemporary film scoring techniques.

Artist Process

A big inspiration for the music of this short was Gustavo Santaolalla, an established Chilean composer, that relies heavily on the Charango and Ronrocco instruments for atmospheric pads, as well as Agustin Barrios, a classical Peruvian guitarist of the early 20th century, largely credited for creating the classical Latin-American guitarist style.
