Black Girl Magic

About the Project

I created this collection of work after discovering the lack of diversity in children’s literature. I made it a mission to design the illustrations I would have loved to see as a young girl. The kind of illustrations that celebrate diversity and the uniqueness of young black girls. A black girl's hair is just so special and unique and comes in so many shapes and textures. I really want girls to love their hair and everything about themselves. As a kid, I remember always getting my hair done. I remember hating the expierence and loving the end result, the bows and barrettes were my favorite. I really focused on creating a cute, bright, and fun illustrations that highlights the uniqueness of young black girls, promotes positivity, and brings a smile to every viewer!

“Isabella’s work has been great this year. Her illustrations have strong positive messages and consistent style and voice. Outside the class, she participates in a number of illustration events and takes time to help other students. It is an honor to have Isabella represent our program.”
