Between Presence and Absence

About the Project

Between Presence and Absence questions the visible world and utilizes photography to discuss materiality and presence. I am questioning the ways in which we interact with the physicality of existence and bringing attention to the subtleties that exist between everything we touch and see.

The twentieth century photographer Nathan Lerner removed us from identifying the world in his Light Box series. Lerner focused the viewer’s attention on the nuances of light by ridding his work of clues of the natural world by photographing in a box where he had full control of the situation. I have adopted similar methods of photographing to explore the phenomena of abstracted light and create a world of ambiguity.

Within the visual abstraction, major structural elements of art including color, shape, and form are brought to the forefront of the subject matter. The photographs create new representations of the world no longer bound by expected perceptions.

About Renee Mudgett

Renee Mudgett studies photography and graphic design. She enjoys seeing and creating art that allows the viewer to reflect upon their life. Art also has the ability to teach others how the world looks through someone else’s eyes. Renee strives for the viewers to see the intended meaning of her artwork while also leaving enough room for personal interpretation.

Her website can be found at renee.psd.cargo.site and her Instagram is @renee.psd.

“Renee Mudget is a multifaceted artist who incorporates various photographic materials and references into her work. She excels in both her landscapes and in her still-lifes, however her integration of both genre into a hybrid, visual assembly have established a new avenue for photographic representation, demanding that the viewer reconcile a recognizable image within an unrecognizable context.

What I enjoy most about Renee is seeing her enthusiasm for experimentation and the excitement she brings to her practice. Over the time we’ve worked together, I’ve witnessed a young artist discovering the power of her vision. Her images have grown significantly since I’ve known her, and as she gains confidence in her photographic strategies, I’m confident she is creating a project that will nurture a lasting career.”
