Mick Rock: The Man Who Shot The 70s

About the Project

Mick Rock: The Man Who Shot the 70s was created for the Exhibition Management Fall '20 course. This exhibition was a semester long project about one of the most exciting behind the scenes rock photographers of the 20th century. The idea came about through the iconic sentiments of the images presented throughout the exhibit.

Everyone knows who the subjects are, but nobody knows who created the photo. Therefore, we thought it would be a great idea to not only showcase his work, but also put emphasis on him as an artist/creative.

We had a really great team with degrees covering fashion, music business, and live entertainment so there were multiple perspectives put into place. Since we worked so well together, it was really easy to portray the mission of the exhibit, which was allowing people to get to know the man behind the camera and making it realistic. Since none of us really had exhibit and curation experience, we learned a ton from this project, basically the ins and outs of what makes an exhibition happen. It was really cool to see all the moving parts and ideas really come to life.

About Brigitte Carson, Michaela Garner, and Jana Gautschy

Brigette Carson: @Brichatta

I am an Arts Management major with a focus in Live and Performing Arts. I love music and strive to work behind the scenes at concert venues. I am also interested in many other art mediums and would love to work with organizations that deal with that as well. Art and business are my passions and knowing I can support it makes me happy in life. After graduation, I plan on continuing gaining experience through my current job and any other opportunities that come my way.

Michaela Garner: @themichaelagarner

Jana Gautschy: @janagautschy_

Aside from music/music business, I love health and wellness and true crime. I am a murderino at heart and want nothing more than to sit down and cozy up on the couch with a glass of wine and a good true crime doc. During my time at Columbia, I served as the Director of Productions for the Student Programming Board from 2019 - 2020 and my role included booking talent, stage managing, logistics, and running the Manifest Mainstage/Booking the headliner.

Since graduating in December, I have gained a full-time position at Pink Shark Music, sync licensing/publishing company. I am head of registration/distribution and royalty collection. I would love to one day work for a major publishing company one day in the A&R Department or Registration/Distribution Department.

“The team’s exhibition proposal for Mick Rock: The Man Who Shot the 70’s epitomes the mix of artistic and pragmatic skills needed to successfully envision and develop a creative project. From the initial curatorial concept prosed by Michaela, the team drew upon their individual interests, academic training, and professional experiences to develop the over-all organization, design, programming, and marketing for the exhibition.

Their proposal reflects a keen selection of images, provides thoughtful cultural context for Mick Rock’s work, and demonstrates a clear understanding of their target audience at the Museum of Contemporary Art -- all packaged in a striking design with smart, engaging text.”

-Bob Blandford, Associate Professor & Coordinator of Arts Management, Business and Entrepreneurship
